In Moments of Solitude

05th Dec, 2012

We say that we want to be alone, independent, strong, individuals, distanced, with no one to bother us, to think with our own minds, use our own heads. But, when it actually happens, we curl up like kittens and start meowing sadly longing for the pair of strong hands to pick us up and pet us gently.

We wish to change the world, to be modern heroes with the old-fashioned meaning of the word. To slay dragons, to save the innocent and take from the rich in order to give to the poor. And on top of it all – to do it alone. We can’t do it alone. That’s a fact. We, social creatures, live thanks to one another, since, if there were no others, we wouldn’t have anyone to compare ourselves to. It would be much harder to seek the truth and eventually find it. When we think about it, we realize it’s silly, really, how much we depend on other’s opinions, ideas, musings, touches… Now, there are two sides to every story, two sides of the same coin. The question being when do we realize all of this? In moments when there’s nobody around us, when we are alone, with our true nature. When the sole thing we can do is look in the mirror and think about what we see there. Ourselves. Yes, in those moments of solitude we find and recognize ourselves for who and what we truly are. It’s a skill, maybe even an art form, which we never let go of once we acquire it.

We strive for perfection, we lose weight, we put on makeup and masks of the impeccable demeanour, we practice our speeches, but, at the end of the day, we still find ourselves in front of the mirror, face to face with the image in the reflection.
