Siblings

13th May, 2016

I can’t stand you hitting me where it hurts
And then implying you love me more than my brother…
That’s hypocrisy.
I can’t stand the possibility of that being true.
Imagine, all of you, one and two…etc.,
How it would sound if he were there to hear it.
It would be hurtful, and wrong.
When he’s there you sing another tune, another song.
You wanted him and me the same, and thus
You had equal amounts of joy for each of us
And you love us both equally.
All of that falls over your mouth
Smoothly as sleighs in wintertime.

With those words not being true,
Or the first ones, addressed to me,
You plow through our feelings reaping all the happiness and delight,
Leaving us with all the sorrow and horror.
Have some decency, leave us at least a nightlight.
A strand of hope, a whiff of strength.
Something not so easily bent.

My words as well may be in vain,
Your conscience hopped on the first train,
Went away, far and wide,
Away from us, leaving your pride.

Don’t worry, I don’t even care.
But remember, I can glare.
Whether you give us a shove,
Or smack us across the face with your glove,
We will rise high above.
There’s no power like siblings’ love.
